Successful Horticulture Exposure visit to Cambodia & China

A 10-member team from the horticulture department from India visited Cambodia and China in December, 2014 with the aim of learning from their experience of producing and marketing horticulture produce especially with the use of local technologies and innovations.

The visit provided a developing country perspective to subsistence farming and livelihood generation. In Cambodia, the group visited Kampot Pepper Association, the Durina and Rambuttan Farm, a Horticulture Practical Farm of Prek Leap National College of Agriculture (PNCA) and Wat Phnom. They met government officials, leading agriculture and horticulture companies and farmers to observe and understand how government policies had been enacted and updated to suit the needs of the local farming community, supporting them to enhance production both for domestic use and export. Rounding off their stay in Cambodia the group also had a chance to soak in the rich cultural and historical background of the country with visits to the Royal Palace, National Museum, Killing Fields and shopping in the colourful and vibrant streets of Phnom Penh.

In China, the group visited several farms, seed companies and greenhouses and interacted with horti-preneurs and native farmers to get a better understanding of the different stages of the food cycle business and how the huge volume of production in the China was managed for profitable gains. At the end of the week-long multi-city tour, the group could identify areas of Sino-Indian trade (import and export), marketing and technology cooperation in the field of agriculture and enter into several MoUs with companies in both Cambodia and China. The group showed a lot of interest and enthusiasm as they climbed the Great Wall of China, walked around Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City, took conducted tours in the evening in the old Beijing and Shanghai areas and enjoyed the authentic Peking Duck apart from other eclectic cuisine.
