Nagaland government’s successful agriculture study tour to China

A 7-member team from the Directorate of Agriculture, Nagaland led by the Additional Secretary visited Beijing, Shouguang and Shanghai with the aim of seeking exposure to the massive progress made by China in the area of vegetable production and marketing. The visit was planned from 22nd to 28th September, 2018.

Through visits to farms, seed companies and greenhouses they got a chance to interact with native farmers and innovative agri experts apart from people at different stages of the food cycle business. At the end of the week-long multi-city tour, they could identify areas of Sino-Indian trade (import and export), marketing and technology cooperation in the field of agriculture.

A visit to the largest vegetable wholesale market in North China where trading of vegetables and fruits from all over the country takes place was a mindboggling experience with thousands of stalls selling all varieties of food, vegetables, flowers and fruits. A special vegetable hi-tech demonstration area allowed the Indian delegation to observe on multimedia and in person the steps taken by the Chinese farmer to follow the “food to plate” cycle. Visit to the Vegetable Industry Group provided access to the vertical integration of vegetable farming and processing and its main products of IQF and fresh vegetables and fruit, dried tomatoes, and tomato paste. The products which are being widely sold to Europe, the USA, Japan, Korea, South Africa, the Middle East, and Hong Kong were on display.

Visit to Sygenta Seeds Company that specialises in seed breeding and seedling raising provided opportunity for exploring tie-ups and exchange for companies in Nagaland. The time spent at the Bio-farm where over 120 varieties of non GM vegetables without pesticides, fertilisers and growth hormones are grown was an enlightening experience with the group trying their hand at sowing and taking a walk along acres of planted produce.

The SunQiao Modern Agricultural Park was an innovation that provided insight in the production of advanced modern agricultural products and to how DNA engineering is done. The manufacture and installation of green houses was of interest to the Nagaland team. Apart from the farm visits, the group had a chance to soak in a slice of Chinese life, from climbing the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and walking through the Forbidden City to getting a grand view of the city of Shanghai from the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, taking the Huang Pu River Cruise, sampling local Chinese food and strolling through local markets selling souvenirs and other bric-a-brac. The cultural show where a traditional kung fu martial art musical demonstration was arranged was a memorable experience.
